Course Material

Students analyze datasets and build AI models in relevant contexts (social media, sports, business, public health, civics).

In 2 weeks, students cover 10 live online modules that move from the basics of the R programming language to advanced techniques (like neural networks). No prior coding experience is required and support is provided by instructors in small groups.

Week 1: Fundamentals

Week 2: Advanced

Students will walk away with a certificate of completion and a real data / AI project, to share with colleges and internships. Students choose projects from a variety of relevant topics, including sports, public health, business, civics, and the environment.

Class Structure & Dates

Each module includes 2.5 hours of live online instruction from experts, blending direct teaching with small-group collaboration.

Bootcamps take place over two week intervals over the summer (10 total modules, one per weekday). Start dates and times are flexible.

  • Start in June, July, or August

  • Attend class in the morning, afternoon, or evening

  • Application Deadline: May 24th, 2024

Applications are considered on a rolling basis. See the application form to browse this summer’s offerings.

Prerequisites: Algebra I (or equivalent). Prior experience in coding (e.g. AP CompSci A/Principles) or statistics (e.g. AP Stats) is helpful but not required! The materials and small group instructional model support students from all entry points.

Buddy program: Register with friends to get placed in the same course section. List your friend(s) in your application to get grouped together.

Tuition & Aid

Skew The Script proudly offers need-based financial aid to help eliminate barriers to participation. Note: both paid spots and scholarship spots in the bootcamp are limited. Applications are considered on a rolling basis, so we recommend applying early to secure your seat. Final application deadline: May 24, 2024.

Note: Applications are evaluated on open responses (e.g. “Why do you want to join the bootcamp?”) rather than traditional academic metrics (e.g. GPA).

K12 Teacher Program

Skew The Script is proud to support K12 educators interested in learning and teaching modern data science techniques. We offer a low-cost asynchronous version of this bootcamp, designed for K12 educators. Educators who complete the bootcamp are eligible to become paid bootcamp instructors in following summers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Yes - we encourage recent high school graduates and college students to also apply. Note: If you’re a K12 educator, check out our teacher program here.

  • Applications are considered on a rolling basis, with a final deadline of May 24th. You’ll hear back from us within two weeks of submitting your application. Applying earlier will increase chances of admission, as spots may fill.

  • Rather than using traditional academic metrics (like GPA), we focus more on your motivation for learning data science. So, we recommend paying extra attention to the “Why do you want to participate in this bootcamp?” question in the application. Spots are limited for both paid seats and scholarship seats. Applications are considered on a rolling basis, so we recommend applying early.

  • We expect participants to attend all bootcamp sessions in order to make the most out of this experience. However, we understand that unexpected circumstances can arise. In order to receive a certificate of completion, we ask that participants attend at least 9 out of the 10 sessions. We’ll also do our best to work with you on a case-by-case basis.

  • Yes! There is a low-cost asynchronous version of the bootcamp for K12 teachers. More information here.

  • Yes! The longest part of each module is the small group section time, where students work in small groups with peers and an expert instructor. These settings are excellent for receiving extra support. In addition, students and parents can reach out to the program administrators if they feel the need for further support, and we provide flexible options.

  • Although prior experience is helpful, no coding experience or statistics experience is required to be successful in the bootcamp. Our small group instructional model provides support to students at various entry points. The only prerequisite is successful completion of Algebra I (or equivalent).

  • Yes - we welcome students from all over the world. However, need-based financial aid is only available to U.S. students.

  • A laptop/computer and internet connection.
